Welcome to Houston-Harris County Retired Teachers

We are an active group of retired school employees who work for the well being of our members, our community, and our schools. As members of the Texas Retired Teachers Association, we serve as advocates for all retired school employees to the Texas State Legislature and the Teacher Retirement System.

The Children's Book Project is a major project that we participate in to provide books for children in Houston. Each year we also give scholarships to high school graduates of our members' descendants. We present interesting programs beneficial to retirees at our meetings. We also plan field trips and other fun activities.

We meet the fourth Thursday of the month September through May at 1:00pm at Bayland Community Center. Our December meeting is a Christmas Luncheon.

We welcome the membership of all retired school employees, their families, and anyone interested in public education and willing to work to achieve the objectives of TRTA and H-HCRTA.

HISTORICAL NOTES

The Houston-Harris County Retired Teachers Association was organized January 1951, under the direction of the late Mr. William Leonard Davis and six other retired teachers. The unit joined the Texas Retired Teachers Association in 1967, under the administration of Mrs. M. O. Sledge. It was chartered by the National Retired Teachers Association in 1972, under the administration of Dr. James Stanley.
